The Protein Pick & Mix | Haul #1

April 8, 2017

I am lucky enough to live near the popular Protein Pick & Mix store which I end up popping into frequently one my lunch breaks. It is not hard to see why they’re so successful, with snacks ranging from protein crisps to cookies, from breakfast cereals to jerky, you walk in there and don’t know where to look first. It isn’t all about food as they have a wide range of supplements too.

With brands including Cocoa+, Dr Zak’s, Grenade, Lenny & Larry’s, Pip & Nut and Quest on their shelves you are spoilt for choice and ultimately you are left wanting to try everything.

So without further ado here is my first The Protein Pick & Mix haul! – You may notice a chocolate/cookie dough theme throughout this, can you tell what my favourite sweet treats are…

Lenny & Larry’s The Complete Cookie, double chocolate chip

Are you a fan of thick, soft-baked chocolate chip cookies? Then look no further. I picked this up as I adore all things chocolate chip and I will certainly be going back for more. I was surprised to learn these cookies are not only vegan friendly but also contain no animal products at all.

Macros per whole cookie- Calories 380kcal, Carbs 54g, Fat 12g, Protein 16g

My mouth watered as soon as I took it out of the packaging, it was baked to perfection. The cookie was thick and soft, an absolute dream, and they haven’t been stingy with the chocolate chips. This is bound to satisfy any sweet cravings!

Lenny & Larry’s The Complete Cookie, triple chocolate brownie

Macros per whole brownie – Calories 250kcal, Carbs 25g, Fat 10g, Protein 20g

After trying the Lenny & Larry’s cookies and falling in love, I was excited to see if their brownies would live up to the expectation – I wasn’t disappointed. The brownie was dense and they have done such a good job at keeping a rich chocolate taste without the ‘protein’ aftertaste. I imagine these would even more delicious heated up slightly with some chocolatey sauce drizzled on top…

FITJOY Protein Bar, chocolate chip cookie dough

Macros per 62g bar – Calories 220kcal, Carbs 25g, Fat 7g, Protein 20g

I predominately picked up this bar because of the way it felt in the packaging…it is very hard so I imagined it would be chewy so it was different from the others. I wasn’t wrong as it was tough to bite into. Chocolate chip cookie dough is one of my favourite flavours and I am sad to say this didn’t do so well in the taste factor for me. There was a hint of chocolate however all i could taste was protein. The weird texture and the lack of flavour means I won’t be picking up another one of these unfortunately.

Battle Oats Flapjack, double chocolate brownie

Macros per 70g bar – Calories 295kcal, Carbs 28g, Fat 11.8g, Protein 15.4g

Flapjacks are one of my favourite sweet treats because of their buttery flavour and chewy texture so I was a little hesitant to try this in case it didn’t live up to my expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. The texture is just like a standard flapjack – thick and chewy. And of course the double chocolate flavour makes it seem as if you are eating something much worse for you than you are. You also get huge chunks of chocolate inside which is so indulgent. This is a new favourite for me!

Top Herd Premium Turkey Jerky, chilli & lime

Jerky is something I haven’t really eaten much of, but after looking at the macros of this turkey jerky from Top Herd I decided to give this a go.

Macros per 35g pack – Calories 99kcal, Carbs 4.6g, Fat 1.1g, Protein 17.6g

I like the macros and the flavour is nice as they had a bit of a kick from the chilli, but I am not sure if I am a jerky lover after trying these! I am not sure if it is the tough texture and dryness but I would rather eat some fresh chicken. If you are a jerky fan then these are well worth a shot as the flavour is great.

Fulfil Vitamin & Protein Bar, white chocolate & cookie dough

The added vitamins to this protein bar intrigued me. I looked on their website for further information and was surprised to see that along with 20g of protein in each bar they have also included nine vitamins including Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin C.

Macros per 55g bar – Calories 195kcal, Carbs 11.1g, Fat 7.3g, Protein 21.2g

I have to admit, I was expecting a strange taste because of the added vitamins. I am not sure how they’ve done it but it tasted great! A few different textures going on with the inside of the bar being quite dense, with a top layer of cripsies on top which are covered in sweet white chocolate. I would buy this again 100% and they also have seven other flavours – I am eager to try the Chocolate Caramel & Cookie Dough one!

Have you tried any of these sweet treats?
