I think a few of us have had a moment in the gym where we wish the ground would swallow us up as a result of a #gymfail. It is totally normal and human for us to make mistakes, even in the gym, so I thought I would share some of my own #gymfails in order to try and normalise the fact that these things happen!
The flying iPhone
I have heard time and time again of this happening to people, and I have seen it happen numerous times. You are running on the treadmill, headphones plugged into your phone and getting into the zone. Next minute your arm hits the headphone wire by mistake and your iPhone along with headphones goes flying off the end of the treadmill. You panic and try to turn around with the treadmill still going and stumble. Solution = wireless headphones.
The failed rep
This shouldn’t be embarrassing, but let’s face it, it does dent your pride when it happens to you. I had one experience of failing a rep and this was on the squat rack. Luckily for me I had the safety bars up so the result wasn’t as disastrous as it could have been (being completely squashed.) It was my first time trying a 60kg back squat and I really wanted to push myself so I thought I would give it a go. I got to the bottom of my squat and I just could not push back up at all as hard as I tried. Of course I panicked at first and then just dropped onto the floor, the bar made a huge bang and I wanted to ground to swallow me. At least I pushed myself, right?
The cracked phone screen
An expensive mistake which took half a second to make. When working on a bench I tend to put my belongings underneath and out of the way, however I hadn’t pushed my phone under far enough and that resulted in a dropped weight on my phone screen.
The arse on show
This mishap made me realise I needed to invest in proper gym wear. I decided to do a pretty intense lower body workout one day using the squat rack and smith machine in some pretty old black leggings I owned. After an hour of lunges, squats and deadlifts I was in the changing rooms changing my shoes and I caught a glimpse of my rear in the mirror and was horrified to see my leggings were completely see-through.
The squashed toe
One of my pet peeves at the gym is 25kg plates being left on equipment resulting in a smaller person having to struggle to get them off before even starting their workout. On this occasion I was nearing the end of my leg workout and wanted to end with some leg presses. Unsurprisingly somebody had left 25kg plates on the machine so I needed to remove these, however I was pretty exhausted from my workout and my arms didn’t want to co-operate. I ended up dropping 25kg on my poor little toe and was convinced it was shattered. I hate to cause a scene and be the centre of attention so I screamed and cried internally and left the gym swiftly to go home and take a look at the damage. I had a black nail for weeks afterwards.
