Growing up I never broke a bone or had any catastrophic accidents; I have been pretty lucky. Now for my full time job I sit at a desk for eight hours and have started experiencing back pain which is hugely common, however I didn’t really want to accept it. Every so often I get a twinge in my upper back which affects moving my neck and ultimately stops me from doing any sort of workout or activities.
I have tried painkillers and ibuprofen creams, however they don’t help the issue, they just mask the discomfort for a couple of hours. This is where a TENS machine comes into play. I have used these in the past for muscle recovery as well as back pain, however they involved being strapped down by three or four wires. The beauty if the iTENS is that it is completely wireless and controlled by an app.
What comes in the box? The compact device and wings, a pair of reusable gel pads and a USB charger. The device takes 2.5 hours for a full charge and that would last you 24 hours of usage.
The app is simple to use – you connect your iPhone to the device using bluetooth and you can get started straight away. There are a couple of options to choose your sessions – you can choose a programme custom to a certain body part, choose what sort of pain you experience, or you can manually create a programme. I tend to use the ‘Conditions’ option and my favourites to use are Muscle Spasm Relief for my back and Muscle Massage for sore muscles post-workout.
One of the best things about using a TENS machine is that you get no side effects and you can do this in the comfort of your pyjamas in front of the TV. For me my back pain definitely subsides when I use this and I can get back to working out much faster than I used to do. I find this really helps my hamstring DOMS too as mine are always so tight after a lower body workout.
If you are looking for a portable and effective pain reliever this is definitely something to consider; the wireless aspect is much more practical than being tangled in three or four wires and being stuck to the spot you’re sat in for half an hour.
